Environmental Stewardship Retreats

Supporting Compassionate Leaders in promoting environmental advocacy.

Our Environmental Stewardship Retreats aim to foster a deep connection with nature while restoring vital trails. Since 2017, we have engaged Compassionate Leaders in trail restoration and conservation work, partnering with the Sawtooth Society, Idaho Trails Association, and Pulaski User Group. Together we have restored trails in the Salmon-Challis National Forrest, Cecil D. Andrus- White Cloud Wilderness, Sawtooth Wilderness, the Frank Church Wilderness, and Nā Ala Helei Trails Association on Kauai and the Big Island.
On these trips, participants learn about trail restoration, wilderness living skills, Leave No Trace principles, and self-exploration in nature. This combination of activities creates advocates for our wild spaces and inspires the next generation to care for our planet.

Mark Hubbard – Friends of Kalalau Trail

“Passion is lifted from the earth itself by the muddy hands of the young; it travels along grass-stained sleeves to the heart. If we are going to save environmentalism and the environment, we must also save an endangered indicator species: the child in nature.”

The Discovery Program

Inviting youth to explore inner and outer landscapes.

According to the National Parks and Recreation Association, “Children today spend less time outdoors than any other generation, devoting only four to seven minutes to unstructured outdoor play per day while spending an average of seven and a half hours in front of electronic media.” As a result many youth are experiencing a disconnection with nature exacerbating poor physical and mental health and decreasing the likelihood of adopting principles of environmental stewardship.  The Discovery program addresses this challenge by facilitating multi-day backpacking trips for 11-18 year old youth.  On these trips participants explore self-reflection, human values, community building, wilderness living skills, route finding and adventure.
