Five Gates Grief Vigil

The Five Gates Grief Vigil is based on the work of Francis Weller from his teachings in “The Wild Edge of Sorrow”.

Our culture is grief phobic. We may even choose to hold our own grief solid, frozen, and alone, rather than risk making others uncomfortable with our sadness.

Join us in this radical act of self care and community as we invite our grief into the room, to be witnessed, held, and then released.

FAQs

Is this like therapy or a sharing circle?

No. While this does offer some opportunities for brief sharing in a dyad in a contained way, this is not a therapy program.

Who is this for?

Everyone. All people carry grief. Francis Weller specifically teaches about the Five Gates of Grief - Everything we love we will lose, the places that have not known love, the sorrows of the world, what we expected and did not receive, and ancestral grief.

What if I don't have a specific thing that I'm sad about, can I still attend?

All kinds of grievers attend these vigils with different types of grief, and all are welcome.

What should I bring or how should I prepare?

You will receive specific instructions on how best to prepare once you register, but the basics include comfortable clothing, a journal and pen, water bottle, and any item that might be associated with your grief, e.g., a letter to a departed loved one, a picture of an extinct animal, ancestors with whom your family had a troubled relationship, etc.

How much does it cost?

While many of Flourish’s programs are offered freely to participants thanks to generous donors, some offerings use a tiered-based price model. Our aspiration is to ensure that all who wish to participate are able to and that we can continue to run a vital, sustainable organization to serve this community for a long time!

Please reflect on both the value you will personally receive from this experience and your current financial reality to support how much you decide to give.
